Much of the media response during the 1918 pandemic was very similar to current media messages. There were messages about hand washing, physical distancing, and proper nutrition and hygiene. Health care workers and volunteers were frequently commended for their service. Many of the hardest hit were communities that were isolated, and this was frequently reported in the media.
Due to the pandemic, the original railway hospital was determined to be inadequate and a new hospital was built in February of 1919. This was followed by the formation of the Hospital Auxiliary, who were responsible for raising most funds for bedding supplies and medical equipment, including the raising of funds for an X-ray machine.
